To make the public transportation facilities in the city more efficient the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) suggested a master plan to construct the Mumbai metro rail system in the year of 2004. The first phase of the metro project was inaugurated in 2006 and construction works started in 2008. It has been calculated that the first line of the metro system will start to operate by the end of 2013.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is also planning to introduce a monorail system in Mumbai. The construction works are under progression and it will be the first ever monorail system in India.
