The NCPA (National centre for the performing arts) Mumbai, India- came into existence in the year 1969 with the grant of Rs 4 millions which were granted from Sir Dorabji Trust of Tata. Further it was supplemented via different corporate sectors donations.  It has focused its attention on promoting and preserving the country’s rich and unique heritage of International and India dance, theatre, music, literature and films along with photography.

It is further considered as the remarkable and wonderful landmark which is standing in part of Mumbai and has completed around 50 years. Initial when it was set up it didn’t had any permanent location and was located at 89 Bhulabhai Desai Road which was the temporary location, which was just having the listening room, small auditorium and a practicing facilities. It was inaugurated by our then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 29th December 1969.

Currently it is one of the essential locations of Mumbai and is located at Nariman point. It is also considered as the home of Symphony Orchestra of India, which came into existence in the year 2006 by NCPA.  Three main attraction or facilities which are provided by NCPA Mumbai are – Jamshed Bhabha Theatre (of 1109-seats), Tata theatre (1010 seats) and Experimental theatre (300 seats).

Some of the objects and purposes due to which NCPA was established are-
  • It was established with the concept of promoting and preserving the traditional, classical and contemporary performances along with the visual arts.
  • It was focusing on the handling of the equipments, Mumbai libraries, museums archives, workshops, and other facilities which were used for the fulfilling of the above objectives.
  • For imparting knowledge with respect to the culture and scientific research in the respective fields. Also wanted to interact with different countries and get the information with respect to their culture and arts.

Across the year there are numerable performances held which includes traditional, classical and contemporary which covers the theatre, music and dances in Mumbai.  Some of the notable and renowned people who performed at NCPA Mumbai are- Vilayat Khan, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and many more. 

It has also attracted some international performers and some of them to name them are - Barber of Seville opera, British council commissioned theatre production, Yehudi Menuhin etc.
